Girard Perregaux for Ermenegildo Zegna Centennial Watch

In celebration of Ermenegildo Zegna’s 100th anniversary, the company commissioned watch maker to produce 100 units of the timepiece seen above. 00 o 00 blog has questioned the timepiece chosen which looks similar to another Perregaux piece. “As much as i love zegna’s watch, i beg to question why is the watch so similar to Girard Perregaux’s ‘1966 annual calendar and equation of time,’ hence the previous connotation of ‘created by, but not created with’.”

Eighty-eight people will be able to enjoy the look of this timepiece.

U-Boat U-42 53mm Submersible Watch

Much of U-Boat inspirations are derived from the world of innovative engineering ranging from racing cars and fighter planes. Last year, U-Boat had created their U-1942 watch based on a concept originally created by U-Boat founder Italo Fontana’s grandfather who had pitched the watch idea to the Italian military in 1942. The U-1942 case measured in at a massive 65mm.

However this year, U-Boat offer a toned down version of the U-1942 with the unveiling of the U-42. A 53mm casing places the U-42 in the same range as conventional U-Boat offerings with a titanium case body ensuring that in the case of an inevitable knock, the watch will be sure to come away relatively unscathed.

Other notable elements and characteristics are the left-sided crown system and a waterproof rating to 300 meters. The watch will release in a run of less that 999 pieces with a suggested retail price of $7,000 USD.

An extensive write-up can be read over at Professional Watches.

MB&F Horological Machine no. 3 Frog

The protruding eyes of the (amphibian) frog enable it to see in many directions without having
to turn its head. the watch's bulbous domes are the opposite, acting as a feature of enabling
the time to be seen easily from many angles without having to turn one's wrist. the 'frog' differs
from its predecessor, the HM3 in that it is the aluminum domes that rotate under the sapphire crystals
in the 'frog', whereas it is the hour and minute hands that rotate around their respective stationary cones
on the HM3.

Rotating domes of this size and shape generated a number of technical challenges. The hour and minute domes are machined from solid aluminum - chosen for its optimal strength to weight ratio. the domes weight just over 0.5 grams each. they are first milled from the outside in,resulting in a paper-thin wall thickness of just 0.28mm, reducing energy requirements to a minimum.

Even the fabrication of the semi-spherical sapphire crystal domes was incredibly demanding and only recently even possible at all. this is due to the fact that any slight imperfection in the sapphire might introduce a disconcerting magnification effect. the sapphire has to be shaped and polished to be perfectly uniform.

The hour dome of the watch, rotates in 12 hours compared to the 24 revolution of the HM3 hour hand, and as the over-sized date wheel is driven from the hours, the gearing driving the date had to be reworked as well.

design details:

movement:
- three dimensional horological engine designed by jean-marc widerrecht / agenhor;
girard-perregaux oscillator and gear

- balance oscillating at 28, 800 bph

- 22k blued rose gold battle-axe shaped 'mystery' automatic winding rotor

- hour and minutes information transmitted via ceramic ball bearings to rotating domes

- it contains 36 functioning jewels and 304 components

- HM3 frog functions with the hour and day / night indicator on one dome
(aluminum dome rotating in 12 hours), minutes indicated on the second dome
(aluminium dome rotating in 60 minutes), date around the movement

case:

- grade 5 titanium / blue 222K gold rotor; limited edition of 12 black titanium / green 22K gold
(black treated with mark-resistant silicon oxide) screwed-down crown

- dimensions (exclusive of crown and lugs): 47mm x 50mm x 16mm

- 53 case components
the dials of the watch are rotating aluminum domes with stationary hands. the strap is made from a hand-stitched alligator with 18K white gold & titanium custom designed deployment buckle.

Richard Mille RM027

Richard Mille created this watch for pro tennis player Rafael Nadal. This complex tourbillon mechanical watch weighs just 20 grams including the strap, its complex movement weights just 3.83 grams.

This was accomplished by using carbon fiber for the case and titanium and aluminum lithium for the rest. This watch will be worn on the court which will prove how durable it is since most tourbillon watches are usually on the fragile side.

Only 50 will be made with a retail price of $525,000.

F.P. Journe Chronometre a Resonance 10th Anniversary Edition Watch

According to F.P. Journe, adjusting the in-house made Caliber 1499.3 movement is very difficult. The movement further has 297 parts with a power reserve of about 40 hour. Check out the gallery below and you can see the dial. Functions include two watch dials, one using discs and displaying time on a 24 hour scale, and a power reserve indicator.

In a moderately sized case, the watch is available in either a 38 or 40mm wide diameter, as well as in a platinum or 18k rose gold case. The watch is very thin at just 9mm thick. Styling is standard F.P. Journe that you either love or feel ambivalent toward. Though the classic style is unique, and always easy to read. Expect this watch to be available this year, and to be made in a limited manner, although it isn't strictly a limited edition watch.

Black Limited Edition – Custom Rolex Watches

T Magazine reports on Black Limited Edition, a series of vintage steel Rolexes turned matte black through highly specialized chemical applications. “Alejandro Alcocer, a watch fanatic and design entrepreneur who has previously delved into skateboarding, catering and handbag design, followed the legend of a black watch supposedly released by Rolex in the late 1960s for the Royal British Army soldiers stationed in South Africa.
It was thought that only 500 were made, but Rolex never confirmed their distribution and they became the holy grail of watch collecting.” So Alcocer made his own.

The Sea-Dweller, Explorer, GMT Master, Submariner, GMT Master II and Explorer II are each offered in an edition of 50 and are now available at Barneys.
