Omega Ploprof 1200

The watch is an engineering masterpiece. The case, though brutish, possesses subtly beautiful curves and polished beveled edges, which offset the brushed surfaces that predominate. The crown guard is keyed to fit perfectly into the corresponding slots on the case when shut. The dial is a deep, abyss black, against which the anodized orange minute hand marks dive time. The rotating bezel echoes the original Ploprof’s, but is updated with a scratchproof sapphire insert that is mesmerizing to look at. The distinctive push button release is anodized orange aluminum and its action is firm and reassuring. The whole package ensures water resistance down to a staggering 1200 meters (twice that of the original 1970 version).

If the whole point of a dive watch case is to protect its movement from water, then the calibre 8500 that lies within is definitely worth protecting. Developed wholly in-house by Omega, the automatic movement is built around a co-axial escapement, which means better accuracy and less friction over a longer period. The movement has twin mainspring barrels which, when fully wound, yield an impressive 60-hour power reserve, should you ever decide to take the thing off for that long.

The watch comes with three strap options. There is a steel mesh bracelet (Omega calls it “Sharkproof”) or two different rubber straps – one orange and one black. All come fitted with a superb clasp that has a ratcheting adjustment and integrated wetsuit extension.

Cost: $8800 (on rubber strap)

Max Bill Junghans Watches

Clean, simple, and elegant design are the hallmarks of Bill’s contribution to timepiece lore. Max Bill Junghans watches are not only known for their near perfect design, but also their near perfect precision.

Junghans recently revived these gorgeous watches from their design archives, and the re-release retains the same aesthetic beauty of the original, with vintage understated sizing of 38mm and an acrylic crystal, updated with modern movements and materials.

The new Max Bill Junghans are mated with hand-wound, automatic, or automatic chronograph Swiss movements.

A little history of the man:

Max Bill (1908-1994) was a man whom others fancied as a ‘universal creator’. His work spanned many mediums including architecture, sculpture, painting, education, politics, typeface design, graphic design, industrial design, and product design. Bill designed a host of watches and clocks in the late 1950s and early 1960s for German watchmaker Junghans, which has been around since 1861.

Cost: $630-$1,900

Welder Watches

From the designer of the popular U-Boat series of watches comes Welder. The line of watches crafted by Italo Fontana embodies some of the same familiar design language from U-Boat in the form of large over-sized casings and technical designs. Of the styles seen here, each features a large-scale 50mm sizing although other models range from 40mm all the way to 53mm.

The line is available now at SSENSE.

Nixon - 2010 Spring/Summer - The 51-30 Watches

For the 2010 Spring/Summer collection Nixon have used orange as its key color and this bright color reflects the Sun and its warm light as well. They will be dropping the popular The 51-30 watches incorporating the orange color against the black backdrop putting a twist on the classic design.

On one hand The 51-30 PU takes a more casual approach with the all black watch detailed with orange dial, accents on hands and logos. As the model name suggests, they have not used a metallic band but have gone with PU material in black color giving it a divers watch aesthetic. On the other hand The 51-30 Chrono takes definite inspiration from Sunset with the whole face made in a smooth gradation of orange from top to bottom, accented with black dials. This version is more formal with its all black metallic band.
